Discovering the Rooikrans Hiking Trail: A Hidden Gem in Mpumalanga

Oct 17, 2024

Nestled in the scenic escarpment region west of the Loskop Dam, the Rooikrans Hiking Trail is more than just a trek; it’s an immersive experience of nature's splendor. Join me as I recount my unforgettable journey through indigenous forests, cascading waterfalls, and stunning vistas that offer a feast for the eyes.

The Rooikrans Hiking Trail, located about 130 km from Pretoria and 150 km from Johannesburg, stands out as a true haven for outdoor lovers. Situated on a picturesque game and cattle farm, this area features a captivating blend of bushveld plains, grassy ridges, and abundant wildlife—making it an ideal retreat for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
As m and my wife set off for our weekend adventure with friends, I was excited by the prospect of what lay ahead. The landscape was already coming alive with hints of summer; however, remnants of the winter dry spell remained apparent in patches of scorched earth. While I braced for high temperatures, it only heightened my anticipation for the refreshing experiences that awaited us on the trails.

The Trails

Rooikrans boasts three meticulously designed hiking routes—each offering its own unique beauty:

  1. Witpenskloof Blue Trail (7.6 km / 3.8 grading)
  2. Job se Kloof Green Trail (11.1 km / 4.5 grading)
  3. Draadkloof Yellow Trail (11.4 km / 5.4 grading)

For those with more adventurous spirits, combining the Witpenskloof and Job se Kloof into one formidable route covers 15.8 km (7.5 grading), perfect for seasoned hikers.
Our group decided to tackle two of these trails over our weekend escape: Job se Kloof on Day 1 and Witpenskloof on Day 2.

Day 1: Job se Kloof

We began our hike early to beat the scorching sun as we traversed flat savanna leading into Job se Kloof. As we navigated through this initial stretch, a quick pit stop allowed us to replenish our fluids and prepare for the climb ahead.
Ascending steeply at 160 meters, we finally reached a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the savanna all the waay to the Loskop Dam—akin to Simba surveying his kingdom in “The Lion King.” Despite the burnt grass below, nature’s handiwork was still evident; it was a poignant reminder that beauty often emerges from adversity.
After soaking in the panoramic view, we descended steadily, passing striking the Rooikrans rock formation through a stretch of trees resembling the Bushfield, back toward base camp just in time to dodge the midday heat.

Day 2: Witpenskloof

On our second day, we switched gears and took on the Witpenskloof Blue Trail—a refreshing departure from the previous day's challenge. The trail led us alongside a mountain stream adorned with lush vegetation providing ample shade from the relentless sun.
The ascent up Aalwynskrans was manageable at only 100 meters but offered a different kind of challenge compared to Job se Kloof due to its proximity to water and vegetation. Once again, reaching the top provided yet another perspective—a moment to pause and appreciate our surroundings.
As we descended toward "Pieter se Klip" (roughly translated as Peters's Rock), it felt like the landscape transformed around us, offering a more forgiving path back down to base camp—culminating in a rewarding experience despite insufficient water flow in the streams due to end of Winter drought conditions.

The Experience Beyond Hiking

What made this retreat even more special were evenings spent around a communal campfire beneath a starlit sky—a perfect opportunity for camaraderie and reflection on our adventures throughout the day. Being eco-friendly means there’s no Eskom power at Rooikrans; instead, we relied on solar and battery lighting—an welcomed to disconnect from technology and embrace nature’s tranquil embrace.
It’s important to note that while there are some conveniences such as gas hobs in the communal kitchen, certain modern comforts are scarce; you won’t find wall plugs for charging devices or hair dryers here! This is truly a place to be fully present—both with nature and your companions.

Accommodations

Two types of lodging options are available: a hiker's dormitory for those who prefer budget-friendly accommodations or a rondavel with two bedrooms for guests seeking added comfort. Regardless of your choice, make sure you arrive well-prepared because shopping is limited—50 km away from your cozy retreat, with a challenging farm rode to get you there!

Conclusion

As I reflect on my journey along the Rooikrans Hiking Trail, I can confidently say that it exceeded my expectations—from stunning landscapes to enriching experiences with fellow hikers. Even though drought conditions may have dulled some sights this time around, there’s no doubt that after rains bring fresh life to this land, it would be an absolute visual feast.
As I left with bittersweet emotions knowing that this gem may close its trails after 2024, I felt an overwhelming desire to return again—to witness its rebirth after rain and reconnect with nature once more.
So if you're seeking your next outdoor adventure or simply wish to step away from your devices for some time, consider making your way to Rooikrans Highking Trail—your body and soul will thank you!
