Elangeni Highking Trail : Discover South Africa’s Elangeni Highking Trail! Enjoy lush landscapes, serene waterfalls, and stunning views.
If you're searching for an adventure that combines stunning vistas, rich history, and the joy of hiking with your furry friend, then let me introduce you to the Elangeni Highking Trail. Nestled in the heart of South Africa's breathtaking landscapes, this two-day hiking route takes you through a world of natural wonders that leave an imprint on your soul. So, let me take you on a detailed journey of my experience exploring this marvelous trail!
Day 1: Setting Off into Nature’s Embrace
Awakening after a nights rest in the Klipspringer Wooden Houses, the anticipation of the first day’s 14-kilometer trek filled us with energy! Starting early is crucial here, especially during summer months when the sun tends to unleash its heat.
The initial stretch along the Elands River offered a gentle introduction—gliding beneath lush canopies with vibrant vegetation. Here, nature awakens with chirping birds and rustling leaves. It felt like stepping into a tranquil paradise.
However, don’t let this gentle start fool you! As I approached the 3-kilometer mark, the ascent began. The trail steepens dramatically as it winds up the mountain slope—a real test for my legs, demanding some stamina and grit. I remember pausing frequently to catch my breath while looking back to admire the spectacular views of the Elands River valley below.
The route is a Well-Marked Trail and easy to navigation to ensure you're never lost in this natural wonder.
The uphill trek rewarded us with panoramic views that were nothing short of awe-inspiring.
After conquering the strenuous ascent, the next 6 kilometers led us along the edge of the escarpment—a more relaxed stroll where we could soak in the beauty surrounding us.
The sights were incredibly diverse; stunning aloes dotted our path and beckoned to be photographed.
As we descended toward the overnight camp, a refreshing mountain stream accompanied us for about 1.5 kilometers. This section was simply invigorating, wrapping up day one on a high note despite facing some challenges earlier.
Before settling in at Sonbessie Hut for the night, I learned that water sources are sparse on day one; it’s vital to pack enough (around 4 liters for men and 2 liters for women) to stay hydrated throughout the trek.
Overnight Facilities: Resting at Sonbessie Hut
After a long day of hiking, our group arrived at Sonbessie Hut—an inviting refuge nestled within a gorge adorned by vegetation. Though safeguarded against intrusions (thanks to extra security), it retains its rustic charm.
- Capacity: Comfortably sleeps 32 in four cozy bedrooms.
- Amenities: Gas geysers for hot showers and communal kitchen facilities including crockery and cutlery.
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming as we shared stories about our hiking adventures while enjoying hot meals prepared in the build-in fireplace on thr front porch.
Day 2: A Waterfall Wonderland
Refreshed from our restful night at Sonbessie Hut, we set off on day two, brimming with excitement for what lay ahead! This day's trek is an easy yet picturesque journey that would lead us back to our base camp at Elangeni Holiday Resort—covering about 11 kilometers.
After a short climb up to reach the plateau, we were greeted by not one but two mesmerizing waterfalls! Our first stop revealed a stunning cascade dropping approximately 65 meters into an inviting rock pool—perfect for cooling off from our exertions.
As we hiked further through beech wood bush towards the second waterfall (a more modest but equally beautiful drop of 35 meters), I couldn’t help but feel gratitude for being part of such a spectacular environment.
The return leg included an easy stroll past fascinating historical sites—ancient stone circles that spoke volumes of tales from yesteryear! This engaging blend of history with nature felt surreal; it added depth to our experience as hikers.
